Opening of newly renovated south wing "A Grand Event"

There was a feeling of excitement and accomplishment on Saturday, September 21st at the official opening of the new south wing at the Odette School of Business. Dean Allan Conway welcomed over 150 students, alumni, professors and faculty, representatives of the University and members of the Odette family to the “Wing of Bud and Ed’s dreams.”

The house that Bud and Ed built

The late L.L. (Bud) Odette and E.G. (Edmond) Odette always wanted the space, formerly occupied by the University’s Bookstore, to be an integral part of the business school that bears their names. Their vision was a space that would motivate and inspire students to connect, to share lessons and to build relationships. Their dream became a reality thanks to the $3 million dollar donation from the P. and L. Odette Charitable Foundation and the E.& G. Odette Foundation. The process took almost a decade of planning, developing, funding and obtaining permits; as well as the time and energy of a number of key players who were recognized at the event including Andrew Kuntz, Assistant Dean Finance and Administration.

In an emotional tribute to her father, Anne Kaye, said that he always wanted the best professors and the best facilities for the students at the Odette School of Business. She said her father and mother were philanthropists who believed in giving back to the community.  She said she could picture her father and her uncle saying to each other, “Not bad for a couple of kids from Tilbury.”

Louis Odette III described his father as someone with vision and determination. “My father always cared more about the people invested in the project rather than the money,” he said. “Completing this project is a milestone for our families.”

Dr. Allan Wildeman, president of the University of Windsor said Ed Odette was vigilant in making sure that the new wing came to fruition. “Bud and Ed always wanted to make the University of Windsor the best it could be for students,” he said.” Dr. Wildeman also took the opportunity to announce an additional gift of $300,000 from Odette School of Business grad, Richard Peddie, with one of the classrooms in the new wing to be named after him as a result. Other speakers at the event included the Honourable Ed Lumley, Chancellor of the University and Dean Del Mastro, MP from Peterborough and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister who brought greetings from the federal government.

The light-filled 20,000 square foot south wing features a wall of recognition honouring the winners of the Louis and Edmond Odette Award for Business Leadership Excellence.

The Honourable Dwight Duncan and John H. Simpson were recognized as the 8th and 9th recipients of the award. Past winners include Richard Peddie, Chancellor Lumley, Mark Barnicutt, Peter Cathcart, Mike Mueller, Sandra Pupatello and Jennie Coco.

The beautiful new facility includes an auditorium that seats 100, a 60 seat and 10 seat video conference room and ample space for students to study, and put on workshops, as well it is home to the Office of Automotive and Vehicle Research and the Entrepreneurship Practice and Innovation Centre.
